Chapter Twelve

Iwalked with Jen to the games room. Through the open door came the sound of the clinking pool balls and the sound of laughter.

What if Ben was annoyed that I’d been gone so long?

I gave myself a shake.

I shouldn’t be worrying about his reaction.

Herb and the others were buying drinks at the bar. Ben stood slightly apart, nursing a can of Witch's Brew.

I waved at him.

Was that a flicker of annoyance that crossed his face before he broke into his dazzling smile?

“Skylar,” he said. “You’ve been a long time. I was getting worried.”

“Long queue in the ladies,” I quipped.

“We should go back to the tent,” said Jen, taking the glass of wine Craig had bought her. “They’re going to do the speeches soon.”

Everyone seemed to have had the same idea, with people crammed into the tent entrances six-deep.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” announced the singer from the jazz band. “Please put your hands together for the chairman of the Gala Committee, Richard Hanson.”

The chairman was a red-faced man. His shirt pulled round his ample belly, and he mopped his brow as he puffed onto the stage and took the microphone.

“First, let me say a big thank you to you all for coming out to support our local charities,” he said. “The ticket sales alone have smashed last year's record already, and we are confident we will be able to buy the new minibus which the whole community can use.”

The crowd cheered at that news.

“There have been many generous people who have made this happen, but I would like to give a special mention to Evelyn Bancroft,” said Richard. “Evelyn, will you please join me on the stage?”

The crowd clapped again. Evelyn, a stout-looking woman in a pale blue two-piece, looked familiar.

Jen nudged my arm. “That’s the cousin that Veronica was arguing with, isn’t it?”

She was right.

“She’s even wearing the same suit,” Jen noted.

“Evelyn and her late husband, Peter, have always been very generous donors to the Tidewater Gala,” Richard was saying. “But this year she has set up a special trust fund in his name, which will help with the day-to-day running of the new bus.”

Evelyn took the mic. “I know Peter would have been proud that his legacy would help the community,” her voice cracked a little, and she swallowed hard. “Des Archer from Azure Horizon Holdings will be managing the fund, and Des has kindly added an extra five thousand pounds in memory of his wife and my cousin, Veronica, who sadly died on Saturday.”

Evelyn took out a handkerchief and dabbed her eyes. A wave of sympathy swept over the tent, and she left the stage to rapturous applause. She went to stand next to Des, and everyone was clapping them both on the back and hugging them.

“That was so touching,” said Herb with a loud sniff.

But my mind was working overtime. We’d never considered Evelyn as a suspect. Yet we’d heard her argue with Veronica about the investments. Erika had also mentioned she was in the foyer at the time of the murder.
